Regurgitated Blasphemous Movie DOGMA Prompts Protest in New York

After 25 years, movie director Kevin Smith is rehashing the blasphemous film Dogma. This direct attack on the Catholic Faith prompted members of the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family, and Property (TFP) to protest outside the AMC Theatre on Broadway in New York City on May 4, 2025.

Vile Mockery of the Catholic Faith

The film mocks everything Catholics hold sacred—God, the Church, the Mass, and Mary’s virginity. It condones murder, obscenity, profanity, drugs, drunkenness, and rebellion.

On Easter Sunday, Kevin Smith launched a publicity campaign called the “Resurrection Tour,” celebrating Dogma’s twenty-five years of sacrilege. AMC Theatres are re-releasing the movie in 1,500 theaters on June 5.

Much of the film’s content is unprintable.

However, Catholics should be aware of its vileness to better defend the Faith.
Warning!
The blasphemous film includes:

  • An infamous woman, known at the time for her nude videos and songs, plays the part of “God.”
  • The film refers to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as sexual intercourse.
  • According to the film, “Joseph and Mary have sex.”
  • “Mary” gives birth to a daughter who works at an abortion mill.
  • It contains 104 f-bombs and other filthy language.

Regurgitated Blasphemy

When Dogma was first screened in 1999, the American TFP held a massive protest. Thousands of Catholics joined a rosary rally of reparation outside New York City’s Lincoln Center. The Most Rev. Francisco Garmendia, then auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New York, was present.

Almost 2,000 Catholics protested Dogma in 1999.

Other Catholic leaders spoke at the protest, including Fr. Benedict Groeschel, founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal; Fr. Peter West; Fr. Andrew Apostoli; and Fr. John Trigilio. Letters of support for the TFP protest were received from the late Francis Cardinal George of Chicago, Archbishop Elden Curtiss, and the late Bishop Thomas Doran, among others.

Today, Kevin Smith and AMC Theatres are once again promoting the same sacrilegious movie. The enemies of God do not tire of hurling blasphemy against the good, the true, and the beautiful.

Young TFP volunteers and local Catholics organized a protest just outside the theater’s doors. With rosaries in hand, they prayerfully opposed the blasphemous production.

Over bullhorns, they cried:

  • “Blasphemy: a sin that cries out to Heaven for vengeance!”
  • “New York! New York! Restore the moral fabric of the red, white, and blue!”
  • “Reparation!”

Poor Film Attendance

Not many people entered the theatre for the 6:00 PM showing of the film on May 4. Some who did mumbled pro-homosexual and pro-abortion catch phrases. Many dressed in garish black clothing, displaying vulgar tattoos and body piercings. One man wore devil horns.

Soon after TFP volunteers began the rosary, a woman screamed, “I am pro-abortion and pro- homosexual. This is New York—go home!”

Two filmgoers shouted “Hail Satan!” in response to the Hail Mary. Others confronted TFP members with a cardboard cutout from the movie, mocking the Sacred Heart of Jesus. An apostate Catholic woman screeched, “Mary is not real! She is not your real mother. Just go away!”

TFP volunteer Nathan Kinley had smoke blown in his face by a man wearing devil horns. The man then attempted to grab Mr. Kinley’s sign. When warned not to touch it, the man asked to grab Mr. Kinley’s rosary instead. Mr. Kinley replied, “No, because you are a Satanist. You have horns on your head.”

“Mary is our favorite”

However, many pedestrians supported the TFP protest or expressed disgust for the film. “That’s awful,” said a New Yorker. “I am not Catholic, but I’m glad you are standing up.”

Two young men commented, “We don’t support blasphemy. It’s disrespectful, especially toward the Blessed Virgin. There is no reason for that.”

A mother with her young daughter added, “This should not be happening. We love Mary.” The little girl chimed in, “Yes, Mary is our favorite.”

Is Blasphemy Free Speech?

Much of the debate revolves around the question: Is blasphemy free speech?

For instance, here’s a typical exchange:
Liberal: “Are you protesting the movie thing?”
TFP: “It’s a movie that attacks the Faith.”
Liberal: “Oh well, they have a right to do that.”
TFP: “No, they don’t. Blasphemy is not free speech. No one has a right to attack God. Can you shout ‘fire’ in a crowded theater?”
Liberal: “Not in a crowded theater.”
TFP: “So, there are limitations.”
Liberal: (expletive)

Blasphemy defames God, the infinite Creator of the universe. No man has the right to attack Him. Moreover, if defamation is not protected as free speech, neither should defamation of our Creator be.

The Catholic Encyclopedia explains:

“Blasphemy is of its whole nature a mortal sin, the gravest that may be committed against religion. The seriousness of an affront is proportioned to the dignity of the person towards whom it is directed. Since then the insult in blasphemy is offered to the ineffable majesty of God, the degree of its heinousness must be evident.”

It is time to oppose blasphemy, stand up for God’s rights, and defend the holy honor of the Catholic Church.

“Public sin demands public reparation,” said Michael, a young local Catholic attending the protest. “We want to create a moral culture. This is a Christian nation. Jesus Christ is the King of everyone, and we need to serve and respect Him.”
