Catholic Campus in Chicago Archdiocese Has Planned Parenthood Club
Established in 1898, DePaul University is the largest Catholic college in the country. However, the institution’s Catholic identity in the Archdiocese of Chicago is in shambles.
Planned Parenthood Generation Action at DePaul University (PPGADPU) enjoys official club status as it promotes procured abortion and contraception on campus. The pro-abortion club boasts of having hundreds of members and its faculty advisors teach in the women’s and gender studies department of the university.
Why is DePaul University sponsoring a Planned Parenthood club that promotes the wholesale killing of innocent unborn babies?
Abortion Is Condemned by the Catholic Church
Let’s reiterate the obvious. Since procured abortion purposefully takes the life of an innocent and unborn child, it can be rightfully classified as murder. Hence, the Catholic Church condemns procured abortion as a grave sin, one of the four sins that cry to Heaven for vengeance.
“Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person – among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2270)
Moreover, the Catholic Church has condemned procured abortion since the first century. Those who formally cooperate with such a sin are punished with excommunication:
“Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law… Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life… and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2271-2272)
The teachings of the Church are clear and remain unchanged despite the moral relativism that our society adopts.
Contraception is Contrary to Moral Law
Contraception -- chemical abortion pills, surgeries, or devices that inhibit pregnancy -- defeats the primary purpose of the conjugal act, which is to participate with God in the creation of children.
Regarding contraception, the Catholic Church teaches:
“Every action which, whether in anticipation of the conjugal act, or in its accomplishment, or in the development of its natural consequences, proposes, whether as an end or as a means, to render procreation impossible is intrinsically evil.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2370)
Planned Parenthood provides and supports the immoral use of contraception, which turns the conjugal act into something sterile and sinful. There is no moral justification for a Catholic institution to favor the mega abortion provider and its notorious promotion of the culture of death.
Selling Baby Parts for Profit
In March this year, David Daleiden, founder of the Center of Medical Progress, gave testimony on Capitol Hill. He accused Planned Parenthood of harvesting organs and selling them for profit, showing several undercover videos as evidence. Mr. Daleiden claimed that there is a network between Planned Parenthood and several biomaterial companies that traffic organs of aborted babies.
Mr. Daleiden, in 2015, published undercover videos that showed Planned Parenthood affiliates selling the body parts of aborted children. Although Planned Parenthood and its allies in Washington have denied these accusations, the evidence presented is compelling.
This begs the question: How can a purportedly Catholic university allow something as immoral as a Planned Parenthood club to operate on campus and still call itself Catholic?
The Sacred Duty of Catholic Institutions
Catholic institutions, such as DePaul University, share the Catholic Church’s duty of saving souls. This mission should be the primary end of any Catholic university, and providing a good education is a means to that end.
According to the Apostolic Constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae of Pope John Paul II, “If need be, a Catholic University must have the courage to speak uncomfortable truths which do not please public opinion, but which are necessary to safeguard the authentic good of society.”
Join the Peaceful Protest
Many Catholic universities have abandoned their mission. Instead of promoting virtue and truth, they have succumbed to the world whose master is not God.
DePaul University must restore its authentic Catholic identity and disband the radical pro-abortion Planned Parenthood club.
TFP Student Action invites its readers and supporters to sign a protest letter to the university president, Dr. Robert L. Manuel, urging him to cut ties with Planned Parenthood Generation Action and stop endorsing or recognizing clubs or causes that undermine the Faith and offend God.
You can also contact the university directly with polite firmness:
