Tell Columbia University: Stop Experimenting on Human Embryos

Columbia University researchers have announced experiments using a new gene-editing technology on human embryos created through IVF.

While scientists describe the procedure as more "precise" than earlier techniques, the fundamental moral problem remains unchanged: innocent human beings are being created through IVF, used as laboratory test subjects, genetically manipulated, and ultimately destroyed.

However, human embryos are not laboratory material. They are unique human beings with a God given right to life.

The researchers are using a technique known as base editing, which alters DNA. While scientists hope it could someday help treat certain diseases, using this technology on human embryos raises profound moral concerns.

Why This Research Is Morally Wrong

  • The embryos used in these experiments were created through IVF, a procedure the Catholic Church teaches is intrinsically immoral.
  • Human embryos are treated as research material rather than respected as unique human persons.
  • The embryos are genetically manipulated and intentionally destroyed after the experiments.
  • No potential medical benefit can justify intentionally taking innocent human life.
  • The long-term effects of editing the human germline remain unknown and could affect future generations.

“In my opinion, I think this is a huge no-no,” said Alexis Komor, Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at the University of California San Diego. “There's just no ethical way to use this.”

Fr. Tadeusz Pacholczyk of the National Catholic Bioethics Center warns: “Creating humans for the purpose of destroying them is invariably unethical and should be illegal.”

  • Defend the right to life.

Urge Columbia University to end experiments that create, genetically manipulate, and destroy human embryos. Scientific progress must never come at the expense of innocent human life.

After signing, please forward this email to family and friends who believe in the God-given right to life from the moment of conception.

Thank you for standing up against the culture of death.
