On January 8, 2026, the University of Notre Dame promoted pro-abortion Prof. Susan Ostermann to lead the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies.

Prof. Ostermann has publicly stated:

  • “abortion access is freedom-enhancing, in the truest sense of the word.”
  • “abortion access respects the inherent dignity of women.”
  • that abortion is “consistent with integral human development that emphasizes social justice and human dignity.” (Salon, May 4, 2022)

The Catholic Church, however, authoritatively teaches that abortion is a grave moral evil.

Notre Dame is not merely a private university. It is one of the most visible Catholic institutions in the world. Its leadership appointments shape its moral compass.

When those entrusted with prominent leadership roles publicly advocate positions that contradict definitive Church teaching, it creates scandal, confusion, and serious doubt about the university’s fidelity to God. If Notre Dame is to remain authentically Catholic, its leadership must reflect the Church it claims to serve.

Most Rev. Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop of Fort Wayne–South Bend, expressed his “dismay and strong opposition to this appointment,” calling on Notre Dame’s leadership to “rectify this situation.”

We respectfully urge the administration to reconsider this appointment and to reaffirm Notre Dame’s commitment to the sanctity of innocent life and to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.
