Tell Saint Mary’s College Not to Honor Pro-Abortion Heretic
- April 17, 2025

Your voice is vital.
Because Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, invited a pro-abortion politician notorious for betraying Church doctrine. Unfortunately, Dr. Mary McAleese -- former president of Ireland -- was selected to receive an honorary degree and give a commencement address on May 17, 2025.
So please sign your protest.
Why Dr. Mary McAleese is unfit to speak at Saint Mary’s College:
1. She Is Vocally Pro-Abortion
Dr. McAleese stated she had “no hesitation” to vote for the repeal of Ireland’s Eighth Amendment, which effectively legalized abortion, and claimed that it was not a sin. (Source: Belfast Telegraph)
Dr. McAleese chaired a pro-abortion meeting at Liberty Hall in Dublin. “I would see the failure to provide abortion as a human rights issue,” she said. (Source: Babylon Radio)
2. She Supports the Sin of “Pride”
According to the BBC, Dr. McAleese marched in the pro-homosexual Dublin Pride Parade “with her son and his husband [sic].” At a separate event, she claimed “the Catholic Church's teaching on homosexuality is ‘evil’.” (BBC)
Since retiring, Dr. McAleese pledged “to use whatever time is left to me” to push back against Church teachings on homosexuality and the role of women. (Crux)
3. She Opposes Church Teaching
When Bishop Kevin Doran of Elphin urged those who voted ‘Yes’ to legalize abortion consider going to Confession, Dr. McAleese responded, saying she had "no intention whatsoever" of seeking forgiveness for her decision. (Irish Times)
During the Synod on Synodality in Rome, Dr. McAleese spoke prominently at a counter-synod, hosted by Spirit Unbounded, which describes itself as “a new international network of reform-minded Catholics,” and severely reprimanded Church leaders and ‘the patriarchy’ for the ‘oppression of women.’ (Life Institute)
3. She Opposes Catholic Education
Speaking on the ShoutOut series Know Your Queer History, McAleese stated, “I wouldn't send any of my children to a Catholic school… There is a dark side of [Catholic education] that perplexes me and worries me. I think now, if I was making choices about schools and the schooling system that I would like my children to have, I would like something that opened them up to greater possibilities than the Catholic Church and its teaching does.” (Irish Mirror)
4. Heretical Views on Women in the Diaconate
Dr. McAleese stated, "The Catholic Church is one of the last great bastions of misogyny. It's an empire of misogyny.” She continued to say that a Church hierarchy that is “homophobic and anti-abortion is not the Church of the future.” (BBC)
In remarks published by Womenpriests.org, Dr. McAleese misconstrues St. Paul’s writings in Romans 16:1 as support for women deacons in her reference to the Bible. “The next issue on the agenda, it seems to me, has got to be women as deacons. Here the biblical support is on our side.” (Womenpriests.org)
Dr. McAleese is not a good role model for students and should never receive a platform at a Catholic college like Saint Mary’s.
